Visiting Islamorada with children means looking for activities that are engaging but not exhausting. You want experiences where kids can see wildlife up close without needing to swim or wear heavy gear. A glass-bottom boat tour fits this need perfectly, offering a dry, safe way to view the reef.

We run the Transparensea, a glass-bottom boat that lets you watch sea turtles, fish, and coral from the deck. You stay dry and comfortable while a guide explains what you are seeing. It is an easy addition to any family day in the Keys.

Do kids need to swim for a glass-bottom boat tour?

No. This is the most common question we get from parents. You stay on board the entire time. There is no swimming, snorkeling, or getting wet involved in our tours.

The boat has 16 glass viewing windows built into the hull. You look down through these windows to see the reef below. This makes it accessible for toddlers, grandparents, and anyone who is not a strong swimmer.

Our guides are trained in marine science and love answering questions from curious kids. They narrate the trip, pointing out sea turtles, eels, and schools of tropical fish as they pass underneath. More about the day reef tour.

What is the best time of day for families?

For most families, the day reef tour is the easiest choice. It runs in the morning or early afternoon, which aligns well with typical nap and bedtime schedules. You see the reef in full daylight, which means bright colors and clear visibility.

If you want a different experience, the night reef tour starts with the sunset and then lights up the reef after dark. This is great for older kids who are interested in nocturnal animals like octopus and lobster. However, it runs about two hours, so consider your children’s bedtime.

On windy days, we switch to the bayside cruise. This trip stays in calm Florida Bay waters, looking for dolphins and manatees. It is a smoother ride and a good option if the ocean is too rough for the reef. More about the night reef tour. See also our guide to what to do in the Florida Keys on a windy day.

How do we keep kids comfortable on the water?

Motion sickness is a concern for many families. The Transparensea is equipped with a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer. This technology reduces boat roll significantly, especially when we are stopped over the reef. A stable boat makes it easier for kids to look through the glass without feeling dizzy.

The deck is open-air for the breeze but has full shade overhead. You can bring your own snacks and drinks, or buy soda and water on board. There is also a restroom on the boat, located down a set of stairs.

We keep the passenger count low, usually around 30 people, even though the boat is certified for more. This gives everyone room to move around and get to the viewing windows without crowding. More about the bayside and sunset cruise.
